There is a legal requirement placed on all businesses to identify hazards from work activities and to assess potential risks, recording them where appropriate. This requirement is often misunderstood.

Many employers not only ignore the basic legal requirement placed on them but also fail to recognise the potential for business savings by carrying out risk assessment accurately.

Programme Overview

This two-day programme not only leads to a recognised qualification but also gives delegates a valuable insight into the benefits that sound health and safety procedures can play alongside mainstream business activities.

The Risk Assessment – Principles and Practice programme is designed for anyone with a responsibility to conduct risk assessments. It is particularly useful for managers and supervisors but it would be equally beneficial to individual workers, team workers, technicians, engineers or any other personnel contributing to the risk assessment process. The course will assist participants to become competent risk assessors utilising their existing knowledge, experience and skills and will provide a foundation for further learning.

Course Content

The programme identifies all the key legislative requirements where the need to carry out risk assessments are clearly detailed. Each of these is supported by worked examples to highlight the practical element of the course. Delegates are encouraged to bring along existing examples from their workplace to compare against ‘best practice’ examples. The course content is enhanced by relevant HSE guidance, detailed programme notes and a comprehensive course book from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

Delivery

Delivery is over two-days, separated by a period of approximately two weeks in which delegates prepare an outline report on key workplace activities to which risk assessment apply or will be carried out. Candidates will receive ongoing support to enable them to produce a report on risk assessment activities in their workplace.

Aims and Objectives

Successful completion of the training programme, assignment and self evaluation will enable candidates to:

  • Contribute to the risk assessment programmes at their workplaces
  • Conduct risk assessments (assuming they have the necessary technical knowledge in relation to the activities/environments/issues being assessed)
  • Organise and implement a risk assessment programme where this has not already been assessed.
  • Participate in the identification of specific training needs for the activities being assessed.
  • Assist employers in meeting legal requirements and promote improved standards of health and safety within their organisation.

Certification

A pass or credit pass is awarded to candidates who meet the course criteria by way of a written report and risk assessment study.
