WHAT ARE NVQs?
NVQs are qualifications based on national standards set by industry.
For example, the standards for the Catering & Hospitality
qualifications have been developed by the Hospitality Training
Foundation in consultation with the catering and hospitality industry.
The standards set define the skills and knowledge required for
a particular area of work. Once the candidate has met these standards
they are then considered competent and can get their NVQ certificate.
NVQs are work-based qualifications and most of the evidence required
will come from performance at work or in a realistic work environment.
All NVQs are structured in the same way and are made up of Units.
A Unit represents an aspect of a job, for example, preparing the
bar area and serving bottled drinks. Each Unit is then made up
of a number of Elements. Each element describes what you must
be able to do and what you must know in order to become competent,
for example:
